IO-Link industrial multi-sensor reference design with L6364W

Designed to facilitate the use of data in smart industrial sensor and actuator networks, IO-Link ICs must be able to drive heavy loads or data lines with minimum power dissipation, ensuring application flexibility and providing a high level of embedded protection and compactness.

In this reference design, the entire system is managed by the mainstream STM32G071EBY microcontroller with upgraded capabilities for IoT and integrated functions. Based on a high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M0+ 32-bit RISC core, the STM32G0 MCU, running the IO-Link control software, manages IO-Link communications between the L6364W dual-channel transceiver and various MEMS sensors via its rich set of standard communication interfaces. The STSW-IOD04K software package includes both the IO-Link control software and the IO Device Description (IODD) with the information about the sensor.

The L6364W transceiver controls IO-Link communications between the 24V bus rail and the microcontroller.

In addition to its internal temperature sensor which can be used as an environmental sensor, the L6364W's internal functions, including a 15-byte data buffer, wake-up detection, and quartz-free IO-Link clock extraction, drastically reduce the STM32G0's workload. Moreover, its embedded configurable DC-DC frequency and voltage regulator improves power dissipation while its multi-octet transmission mode drastically reduces MCU computation effort, further lowering the application’s power consumption.

Finally, the L6364W's internal architecture ensures reverse polarity protection and high EMC immunity according to IO-Link standard, including up to ±2.5kV surge pulse (500 Ω coupling), guaranteeing that the entire application can operate in harsh industrial environments
