近距離無線通信(NFC)は、短距離ワイヤレス通信によって、電子機器間の双方向通信を実現するための技術です。NFCはRFID(Radio-Frequency Identification)の一種であるものの、ISO/IEC 14443やISO/IEC 15693といった固有の規格をもつため、NFC対応機器の相互運用性が保証されています。

NFCは2つのデバイス間の誘導結合を利用し、13.56MHzで動作します。NFCデバイスは他のNFCデバイスが生成するRFフィールドから電力を受け取ることができ、バッテリや電源なしでも動作します。そのためタグやステッカ、キー・ホルダー、カードのような小さな媒体に適しています。電力供給を受ける際も、NFCが必要とする電力量はごくわずかです。そのため、NFCはスマートフォンのようなバッテリ駆動式の機器に最適です。

伝送距離が非常に短いため、NFCによるトランザクションは、その他の無線技術で伝送されるトランザクションと比べて安全です。
