Smart monitoring is an integral part of Industry 4.0, enabling efficient manufacturing and industrial processes.

Based on smart embedded sensors, smart monitoring systems measure the environmental condition of goods, and track them throughout the supply chain.

Key market figures

  • In 2022, 40 billion sensors were shipped across the world (all applications)
  • Temperature sensors represent the largest sub-segment with 178.3 million units shipped in 2021
  • Over the 2021-2026 period, the temperature sensor market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.3%

Maximizing the benefits of smart monitoring devices

Although sensors have become ubiquitous in smart applications, this market still faces one major challenge: the ability to offer smart monitoring systems featuring convenient connectivity and large memory capacities. Because environmental sensors collect a large amount of data that needs to be quickly and easily collected, smart monitoring systems require new technologies, such as Near Field Communication (NFC).

NFC technology for condition monitoring: how it works

NFC is a wireless technology enabling contactless communication between a reader and a tag.

Tag located in a box read by an industrial reader

Embedded either in goods or parcels, a dynamic NFC tag is coupled with environmental sensors and a low-power microcontroller. The dynamic NFC tag is a passive (and battery less) electronic component that combines a nonvolatile memory and wireless connectivity capacities. This participates in building a reusable and cost-effective condition monitoring solution.

On the other side, an NFC reader wirelessly powers the tag and reads its content. Depending on the application, users can leverage industrial readers or smartphones with NFC capabilities.
