IPCEI on Microelectronics

The IPCEI on Microelectronics (Important Project of Common European Interest) is a major European initiative approved initially in 2018 to strengthen the EU's technological sovereignty and competitiveness in microelectronics. It brings together multiple European countries, companies, and research organizations to collaborate on research, development, and first industrial deployment of microelectronics technologies across the entire value chain, from chip manufacture and hardware design to process know-how and downstream applications in sectors like automotive, medical technology, AI, and more.

The IPCEI on Microelectronics supports research, development, innovation, and first industrial deployment. This initiative involves significant funding from Member States and supports projects that could not be realized under market forces alone, addressing strategic European interests in key enabling technologies.

5 countries are taking part in the IPCEI Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The direct participants, members of the project, carry out more than 40 closely interlinked sub-projects and work in collaboration with many indirect partners, also beyond the 5 participating countries (R&D organizations, SMEs).

The IPCEI on Microelectronics addresses 5 technology fields: Energy efficient chips (TF1), Power semiconductors (TF2), Smart sensors (TF3), Advanced optical equipment (TF4) and Compound materials (TF5).
STMicroelectronics is a major actor in the IPCEI, actively contributing to 4 technology fields (TF1, TF2, TF3 and TF5) and working in close collaboration with many European stakeholders.

Italy

In July 2025, the delegation of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy verified the implementation of the "IPCEI (Important projects of Common European Interest) Microelectronics" project, which involved all STMicroelectronics offices in Italy between 2018 and 2024, mobilizing significant investments for research, innovation and first industrial application (FID) in 3 Technology Fields:
-  TF1 energy-efficient chips
-  TF2 Power Semiconductors
-  TF3 smart sensors.

The project, authorised by the decision of the European Commission of 18 December 2018, involved 5 Member States, 30 companies and 2 research organisations. In Italy it was financed by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, through the fund established by Law No. 145 of 30 December 2018, and by the Sicilian Region with a 2014-2020 ERDF contribution, as part of action 1.2.1 (www.euroinfosicilia.it) managed by the Regional Department of Productive Activities.

The innovative microelectronic technologies and components developed will be transferred to companies in the automotive, industrial and consumer electronics sectors, first and foremost. At these companies they will generate innovative applications and further research activities, thanks also to the dissemination and spillover activities conducted by ST in synergy with the other direct and indirect participants, as an integral part of the IPCEI Microelettronica project.
