Commercial energy storage battery systems running over hundred kW are designed to level out peaks in electricity use (peak shaving), shift loads and provide emergency backup and frequency regulation to ensure grid stability and power quality. Energy storage battery systems are often combined with renewable energy sources – including wind and solar power - to smooth-out system varying and intermittent outputs. They usually contain bi-directional DC-AC inverters for grid interfacing and bi-directional DC-DC converters that independently control energy flows to and from each battery rack. This ensures they are kept in their optimal operating state and helps minimize battery imbalance for improved system efficiency, capacity, lifetime and maintenance.
