Three-phase electricity meters are designed essentially to measure energy consumption and its quality factor, as well as provide means to prevent tampering.

Today's 3-phase smart meters can connect to a wide-area network (WAN) and the cloud, through a data concentrator and a home area network together with in-home devices, in addition to gas and water meters. This enables the Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that helps utilities better manage customer services and encourage consumers to embrace energy-savvy behavior to optimize their costs.
