e-readers

eReaders are defined as any device able to display text on a screen. Primarily designed for reading digital e-books and periodicals, modern eReaders use powerful hardware capabilities and complex operating systems. With limited user interface functions, eReaders embed a wide spectrum of features for internet browsing and audio playback in addition to more complex multimedia capabilities for image and video capture and streaming as well as for advanced touchscreens with features that also help make reading in the dark easier on the eyes.

Key Challenges

Over the past years, we have observed twists and turns in the evolution of e-book readers with more and more people gradually changing their reading habits from traditional books to these lightweight, environment-friendly electronic devices. However, the rapid growth of tablets and portable PCs provides strong competition to e-readers. In the end, e-readers can still provide added value to the users in terms of improved battery lifetime and better eye protection thanks to their unique E-ink display.

The following challenges emerge as key elements in the design process of e-readers:

  • Reduce power consumption of the processor and the wireless communication devices to ensure maximum autonomy;
  • Ensure reliable wireless connections to peripherals such as a smart pen;
  • Enable convenient user access to digital book libraries and online resources with reliable encryption and security features;
  • Provide a touch sensitive user interface to mimic ordinary motions such as page-turning, note-taking, bookmarking, etc.

Our Products and Solutions

As a creator of unique technologies and products that provide our customers the best solutions to address their challenges and opportunities, ST provides both mobile platform suppliers and mobile device manufacturers (OEM/ODM) with a complete range of products and development resources to help the design of leading-edge mobile devices. With a complete range of low-power products (Bluetooth Low Energy ICs, 60-GHz RF modules, high-integration filters, etc.), our RF offer includes RF SOI technologies designed to improve wireless connectivity performance.

In addition to our portfolio of MCUs for specific low-power task control, our MEMS motion and environmental sensors as well as image sensors and time-of-flight devices can significantly enhance the user experience.

Along with a wide range of dedicated high-integration protection devices such as ESD protection and EMI filtering devices to ensure reliable connections via USB and HDMI devices as well as access to SD cards, ST offers a complete range of analog products and high-efficiency power and energy management devices optimized for battery-powered systems including touchscreen power management and wireless charging solutions.

Moreover, ST provides a comprehensive set of both hardware and software development tools and other developer resources to help you reduce development time and costs while gaining market share thanks to a shorter time to market.
