Solid state circuit breaker (SSCB)

Key challenges

Solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) exhibit higher on-state resistance compared to mechanical contacts, resulting in additional heat generation and increased cooling demands. High-power applications often require series or parallel configurations to manage voltage and current constraints, while bidirectional current flow in DC systems adds design complexity. These devices can be sensitive to overcurrents, raising concerns about short-circuit robustness and thermal runaway. Additionally, SSCBs tend to have higher upfront costs in high-power systems, and their fast switching behavior can introduce significant electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Many of these issues are being addressed by wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). WBG devices offer lower conduction losses, faster switching, higher operating temperatures, and higher ruggedness than silicon. While silicon remains a cost-effective option for many applications, WBG technology is maturing and promising reduced costs and wider adoption in SSCBs.
