Power distribution unit (PDU)

Modern vehicles demand highly efficient and reliable power distribution systems to support an increasing number of electronic functions. The Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is central to this evolution, enabling optimized energy management, enhanced safety, and improved overall vehicle performance. ST’s latest architectures, using the Power Distribution Unit and combining STi²Fuse smart switches with Stellar 32-bit automotive MCUs, enable safe and flexible power networks. These networks reduce wire-harness weight, length, and cost while improving electric vehicle performance and driving range. As automotive design shifts towards electrification and digitalization, the traditional 12V powernet is evolving into more robust 48V systems. The PDU is suitable for both legacy 12V systems and new systems based on the 48V voltage level.

Products and solutions

STi²Fuse, smart switches for wire harness protection

STi²Fuse is a new family of intelligent fuses designed to replace standard melting fuses in automotive power distribution systems.

These devices enable savings on components and production costs while extending EV range and reducing the vehicle's carbon footprint. Their monitoring, control, and digital interface capabilities help automotive systems comply with ISO 26262 and related Safety Integrity Levels (SIL).

Stellar 32-bit automotive MCUs

The Stellar platform consists of multiple series of automotive microcontrollers built around a versatile Arm®-based architecture. The Stellar P and Stellar G series are designed to support real-time virtualization of multi-ASIL ECUs while the Stellar E series addresses the needs for electrification.

All series boast an extensive array of I/Os and peripherals, making them suitable for modern car ECU solutions. The Stellar P & G product lines include xMemory, build on ST PCM technology, providing over twice the memory density compared to other eNVM technologies. Stellar with xMemory offers more headroom for current and future application needs.

Intelligent power switches with VIPower technology

VIPower technology powers intelligent switches with built-in sensors and advanced CMOS components, offering robust protection, improved application integration, and higher power density. The latest TrenchFET design reduces on-resistance by 35%, ensuring efficient load management and reliable fault detection in smart automotive power distribution.
