Microinverters are often used as an alternative to string inverters to perform the DC to AC power conversion at solar panel level in residential photovoltaic systems. A solar micro inverter helps maximize energy yield and mitigate problems related to partial shading, dirt or single PV panel failures.

A microinverter is composed of a DC-DC converter implementing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and a DC-AC inverter to shape current and voltage for injection into the AC grid. Data – including voltage, current and power generated - from all microinverters in the installation are collected and logged by a concentrator and then dispatched to a local or remote monitoring and control access point.

Our solutions and ICs for your microinverter design include power MOSFETs, high-voltage, galvanically isolated gate drivers and high-voltage silicon-carbide (SiC) diodes. Combined with high-performance STM32 microcontrollers, ST can provide a set of dedicated peripherals to help implement complex power conversion control algorithms. Energy metering ICs, wireless and wired connectivity solutions including multi-standard Power Line Communication (PLC) modems complete this portfolio.
