Since legislation in many countries has halted the sale of the less efficient incandescent bulbs, markets have seen dramatic growth for fluorescent lamps that are possibly the most widespread light source in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. Available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes including tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) combine all the advantages of fluorescent lamps with the familiar connections and outline of incandescent bulbs. Featuring higher luminous efficiency, better color rendering, and longer lifetime, compact fluorescent lamps also consume much less energy than conventional light bulbs. High-efficiency, high-frequency electronic converters, also known as ballasts, are needed to properly drive fluorescent tubes and high-intensity discharge lamps (HID) with efficiency, reliability and cost being the greatest challenges.
