Since legislation in many countries has halted the sale of the less efficient incandescent bulbs, markets have seen dramatic growth for fluorescent lamps that are possibly the most widespread light source in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. Available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes including tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) combine all the advantages of fluorescent lamps with the familiar connections and outline of incandescent bulbs. Featuring higher luminous efficiency, better color rendering, and longer lifetime, compact fluorescent lamps also consume much less energy than conventional light bulbs. High-efficiency, high-frequency electronic converters, also known as ballasts, are needed to properly drive fluorescent tubes and high-intensity discharge lamps (HID) with efficiency, reliability and cost being the greatest challenges. ST offers a comprehensive range of Power MOSFETs and Power BJT devices to help design efficient ballasts.   Read more

HID Lighting

High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps offer better lumen efficiency, color rendering and focusing capability as well as longer life compared to low-pressure fluorescent lamps. Their superior performance makes them popular for hotel and restaurant ligh

High Frequency Ballast Solution

While set to be replaced by more efficient LED solutions, fluorescent tubes and compact lamps (CFL) are still rather popular. They are driven by a high-frequency power converter that most often has a power factor correction (PFC) front-end to ensure
