Power over Ethernet ICs

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a widely adopted technology that transfers both data and electrical power over a standard RJ 45 Ethernet cable. This eliminates the need for separate power supplies and simplifies system installation. ST’s Power over Ethernet ICs provide complete solutions on the powered device (PD) side, supporting IEEE 802.3af (PoE), IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) and, with the latest products, IEEE 802.3bt high power 4 pair PoE up to 99.9 W. The PM880x family integrates PoE PD interfaces, dual active bridges and current mode PWM controllers, allowing designers to implement efficient, compact and protected 48 V power stages for a wide range of PoE enabled equipment.

Benefits

  • High integration
Dual active bridge, hot swap MOSFET and PoE-PD interface in a system-in-package
  • Higher efficiency and lower power loss
Active MOSFET bridges and integrated hot swap FETs minimize conduction losses versus diode bridges, especially at higher PoE power levels.
  • Simplified PoE PD design and faster certification
Integrated detection, classification, UVLO, inrush and current limiting reduce external circuitry and ease IEEE 802.3af/at/bt compliance.
  • Flexible, scalable 48 V power architectures
Current mode PWM controllers with dual gate drivers support flyback, forward, and active clamp topologies, scalable from PoE/PoE+ to 4 pair PoE up to 99.9 W.
  • Robust protection and high reliability
Built in over current, short circuit, thermal, and over voltage protections increase system robustness in industrial and telecom environments.
  • Optimized coexistence with auxiliary supplies
Front and rear AUX support, standby/sleep modes and advanced MPS handling enable seamless operation with external adapters and reduced standby power.
