2018 was another successful year for STMicroelectronics at CES and an exciting year to showcase our latest technologies and demonstrations within Internet of ThingsSmart Driving, and Smart Industry.  Below you will find material on Smart Industry technologies and demonstrations showcased at the event, as well as photos and video taken during the exhibition.

Highlighted solutions include industrial monitoring, predictive maintenance, high-performance 3D printing, robotics, and sensor nodes with IoT cloud connectivity.

Ultrasound Inspection for Condition Monitoring

The high frequency audio signature of a gas leakage can be detected via embedded processing of ultrasound captured by analog and digital MEMS microphones

  • Precise ultrasound processing can be easily achieved with ST industrial IoT system platforms
  • The demo previews some of the capability that will be featured by a soon-to-be-announced ST industrial product

Vibration Monitoring for Predictive Maintenance

Inertial and environmental sensors connected via IO-Link are used to detect the state of the motor, making it possible to predict degradation or failure

  • Vibration monitoring with cost-effective MEMS accelerometer over IO-Link industrial connectivity
  • STM32F4 microcontroller performs local real-time frequency/time domain analysis for early motor failure detection

ST Parts: STEVAL-IDP005V1 (ISM330DLCLPS22HBHTS221STM32F4L6362A) is fixed on the motors and is connected via IO-Link to the STEVAL-IDP004V1 (L6360STM32F2). The two motors are driven using one dual motor control board STEVAL-IHM042V1 (L6230STM32F3)

Robotics SDK (MIP Robotics)

Demonstration of the ST Motor Control platform in a SCARA robot from MIP Robotics

  • Robot arm can move the objects with 0.1 mm precision
  • Each robot joint is controlled by an ST motor control solution using STM32 MCU and L6230 built on the ST motor control development platform
  • The motor controller nodes communicate with the main controller over CAN bus implemented in the STM32

High-Performance 3D Printing

Advanced high-end electronics for 3D printing achieving extremely high accuracy, very high-speed printing and Wi-Fi high speed G-code remote upload. The demo is built with professional delta 3D printer for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)

SmartTag to Industrial IoT Cloud

Complete sensor node (SmartTag) with Industrial IoT cloud connectivity collecting motion & environment data, and transmitting to the cloud using NFC & the Sigfox network

  • The SmartTag continuously monitors the sensors and accumulates information until it comes in proximity to an NFC reader
  • The SmartTag sends the unique ID and event data to the NFC reader that, in turn, sends the data across the Sigfox network to the GE PredixCloud
  • GE Predix back end receives & processes the data while the front end formats and displays the data

Humanoid Robot

ST’s advanced solutions for sensing, connectivity and processing, to create new possibilities in robots

  • The robot integrates 47 ST products: STM32 microcontrollers (23), sensors (16), MEMS actuators (1), RF ICs (2) and more (5). They allow the robot to react to temperature, pressure, and motion; to detect user presence, respond to gestures, and project images on a screen
  • Development fully based on ST’s reference boards and reference firmware. Customers can take inspiration from the robot platform and replicate the same functions in their own designs
