Our Company’s waste management program covers all of the waste streams that are generated by our operations, plus all the related activities and products.
This waste includes hazardous substances, metals, packing, plastics, effluents and other nonbiodegradable materials.

|Waste from operations
ST has set stringent targets to reduce waste generated from operations and to reuse or recycle materials. Dedicated areas have been built into all our manufacturing sites for waste collection, segregation and disposal. Each site ensures that waste is segregated and then managed as a distinct waste stream. Waste management is a key area of concern, as taking the wrong action at any point from generation to final disposal can potentially affect people’s health and the environment.
We take care to reduce all the risks related to our activities. Wastewater is either treated on-site or in municipal treatment plants to remove pollutig substances before being discharged into the natural environment.
ST pays particular attention to hazardous waste resulting from production processes e.g. chemical substances, contaminated plastics and light-bulbs. Most hazardous waste is recycled or reused and the remaining waste is safely disposed of by specially-authorized companies.
ST’s waste management strategy extends to external partners. We conduct regular audits on waste storage, recycling, treatment and disposal of subcontracting and waste transport companies against ST requirements.
Contributing to the Sustainable Development GoalsOur commitments and programs related to Waste contribute to:
SDG target 3.9 - Substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.
SDG target 6.3 - Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.
SDG target 12.4 - Achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.
