Dual-core, multi-protocol wireless STM32WB microcontrollers, supporting Bluetooth® LE, Zigbee®,Thread® and Matter® connectivity
Based on an Arm® Cortex®‐M4 core running at 64 MHz (application processor) and an Arm Cortex‐M0+ core at 32 MHz (network processor), STM32WB wireless microcontrollers support Bluetooth LE 5.3 and IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standards such as Zigbee, Thread and Matter.
Bluetooth Low Energy
Bluetooth Low Energy RF transceiver comes with certified Bluetooth® LE 5.3 radio stack, profiles from the Bluetooth SIG, Mesh profile-compliant V1.0 Bluetooth SIG release.
A BLE LLD for proprietary protocols or a host controller interface (HCI) for Bluetooth Low Energy solutions supporting either Zephyr or Arm Cordio stack, address various integration needs.
IEEE 802.15.4 standards: Zigbee and Thread
The generic IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer ensures the STM32WB can run proprietary protocols, full stack with Zigbee PRO 2017 and low-power OpenThread Mesh networking protocols. Designers have then several options for connecting devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). Different certified configurations are available to provide more freedom in terms of device sizing and OTA capability, enabling platform optimization.
STM32WB supports all Zigbee network topologies with optimized footprints: Zigbee RFD and FFD deliveries covering end-device, coordinator and router roles.
Thread technology is also covered with all MTD, FTD and Border Router deliveries covering sleepy end-devices, router, and leader roles, thereby also enabling gateway infrastructures.
Multiple protocols working together
STM32WB MCUs can run Bluetooth LE 5.3 together with 802.15.4 wireless protocols, Zigbee or OpenThread protocols in concurrent modes.
This enables more convenient device management during installation and configuration, and significantly improves overall user experience.
Supported by the STM32WB MCU, Matter is an application layer, which aims at making smart home devices interoperable.
An open-source standard, Matter ensures seamless interactions between connected devices across different IP technologies. It is available in the Matter GitHub.
In a Matter network, Bluetooth LE is used to commission devices and runs in a dynamic concurrent mode with the Thread protocol.
The innovative architecture of STM32WB MCUs is based on two totally independent cores, optimized for real-time execution (radio-related software processing). It enables flexible resource use and efficient power management.
