Blind-spot application educational tool

Optimizing safety is a leitmotiv for car designers. Automotive engineers constantly strive to develop ways to ensure the safety of drivers and their passengers in addition to other vehicles and pedestrians sharing our roads and highways. This educational tool, based on a blind-spot detection and warning application, helps automotive engineers discover the advantages of ST's AutoDevKit™ development initiative in designing increasing complex embedded systems.

This tool simulates how a warning application can notify the driver of a vehicle when it detects an obstacle in its blind spot, for example when one vehicle is trying to overtake another. The tool uses a Hall effect sensor to detect a change in the magnetic field to verify if an overtaking vehicle is in the blind spot. In real systems, the magnetic sensor will be replaced with a different technology such as sonar, radar, lidar, etc.

This AutoDevKit educational tool consists of:

      • The blind-spot detection simulation kit (AEKD-BLINDSPOTA1) which includes a hardware simulation mock-up
      • A set of assembled boards (AEKD-BLINDSPOTB1) required to drive the blind-spot detection simulation

Created for educational purposes, in this case to help developers design a warning interface, the simulation kit can be used in two ways:
      • Simply wiring the boards according to the provided instructions, to observe the system running with the firmware inside the microcontroller
      • Teaching one's self how to build a prototype automotive application using our AutoDevKit solution
